The Value of an Estimate: Obtaining the Information You Need
It's important to obtain written estimates before any move. This will give you an idea or even an exact cost of how much your move will be. In addition, it will spell out early on what services your mover will provide.

It's in your best interest not to be sneaky. Be open and honest with a company of the fact that you are getting quotes from other movers. You may even want to show them estimates from other movers to ask how their services compare. It's your money and your goods - there is nothing wrong with shopping around.

Questions to Ask Make sure you ask, understand and have written documentation of the following:

  • All rates and charges that apply
  • The mover's liability to your belongings
  • How pick up and delivery will work
  • Whether your estimate will be binding or non-binding
Understanding a Written Estimate
The estimate should include certain information, such as labor charges, truck information, packing materials, travel time and valuation coverage (insurance). Make sure you understand the following:
  • All rates and charges
  • Level of liability the mover has for your belongings
  • Pick up and delivery procedures
  • Your claims protection

You need to be particularly careful if your estimate is based on weight. This can be a problem because it is impossible to estimate the exact weight without weighing the materials. Always check first how the company's system works and establish how binding their quote is. Understand your estimate and know what you are getting. If you refuse to pay extra charges, the mover will probably keep your belongings until the issue is resolved. You have the right to be present when your goods are weighed to check for accuracy. In addition, you also have the right to ask them to reweigh something. If this is something you may want to do, make sure you ask up front.

Choosing an Estimate
Once you have talked to each company and have read through the detailed quotes, you'll be ready to make your choice. There are several factors that may determine your choice - you may decide to go with the most inexpensive company or you may go with the company that made you feel most comfortable.

Break down each estimate and compare them item by item. Don't always go with the lowest price! Do your research. You may be getting a good deal, but it may be too good to be true. Expect estimates to fall with a reasonable range of each other. A good estimate should be no higher - or lower - than 10 percent of the final cost of the move.

Once you have decided on a company, remember, don't sign any blank paperwork and don't sign anything if you are not absolutely sure what it means. You shouldn't worry about making a company wait for a signature, if they want your business, they will be willing to wait. Once you have signed an agreement and have scheduled your move, be sure to follow up at least a few days before the move to confirm.
